My trip to Boulder: Jared Polis

On March 4th I traveled to Boulder, CO for my first time. My flight arrived in Denver around 4pm and I was in Boulder about an hour later. I was scheduled to meet with Jared Polis (currently running for congress…previously founded three successful companies – Blue Mountain Arts, ProFlowers.com, and American Information Systems). Our meeting was rescheduled for later that night in my hotel lobby. He arrived an hour and half late and was in the mountains with zero cell phone service.

Jared is probably one of the busiest guys I know. I walked down to the lobby just before 10:30pm and saw him on his cell phone trying to start his Dell XPS laptop. We finally shook hands and sat down to where he was pulling ringing phones out of his pockets and receiving emails through his inbox. He finally turned off all of his distractions and we started to chat.

It was just after 10:30pm at night. He hadn’t had dinner and was leaving to catch a 1am flight to NYC. He provided great insight and I am really glad we finally got to meet in person. He told me something that I will probably remember for a long time..

He knows that I am a big tennis player and used an analogy. He said to me that it does not matter how many tennis coaches or professionals you speak to…at the end of the day it is just you and your opponent on the tennis court and you have to prove to everyone that you can win. In business it is the same. I can speak to and learn from as many successful and not so successful people as I want to but at the end of the day…it is all up to me. I have got to implement my idea and hopefully at the end of the day…Clagster will make a difference in peoples lives.

My next, and final day in Boulder was spent at the TechStars For A Day event. More to come.
